Red Bronze Ritual Form
Artifact Details
Estimated Period: Early 20th Century
Region: South India
Material: Copper-Rich Bronze (Vengalam)
Weight: 0.5 kg
This Annapakshi form reflects an early period of South Indian ritual metal casting characterised by copper-rich bronze alloys, which develop a deep reddish-brown tonality over time.
Prior to the wider standardisation of commercial brass production in the mid-20th century, such compositions were used in devotional and ceremonial objects for their density, durability, and tonal warmth.
The Annapakshi, the celestial swan is traditionally associated with discernment (Neera-Ksheera Viveka), symbolising the ability to distinguish essence from illusion.
Hand-chased vine scrollwork across the plumage indicates a workshop practice attentive to surface refinement and finishing detail.
Condition
Natural darkened patina consistent with age.
Minor surface irregularities inherent to hand casting.
