This form is commonly referred to as a “Colombo Lamp” - a term used in the antique trade to describe a class of tall, heavily cast South Indian brass lamps that circulated between Chettinad merchant families and Colombo (Sri Lanka) during the early 20th century. The designation reflects trade geography rather than manufacturing origin.

Description

The lamp follows the classical vertical Kuthu Vilakku composition:

Wide circular base for structural grounding

Tapered lathe-turned shaft

Deep oil reservoir with multi-wick rim

Annapakshi (mythical swan) finial

The Annapakshi motif symbolises discernment — the mythical ability to separate essence from illusion. The form is architectural rather than ornamental.

Material & Condition

  • Substantial 5.5 kg mass

  • High-metal-content casting consistent with pre-mid-century production

  • Deep oxidation within mouldings

  • Verdigris traces from prolonged oil exposure

  • Surface wear consistent with ritual use

Curatorial Note

The weight is its primary certificate.

In early 20th-century South India, brass objects of this density functioned as both ritual implements and material assets. A lamp of this scale would have anchored a principal shrine room or ceremonial hall.

The “Colombo” designation reflects merchant-era circulation, not colonial manufacture. This is temple-grade domestic architecture in metal.
