Vaishnava Hand Lamp

Estimated Period: Early 20th Century
Region: Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu (Chettinad)
Material: Heavy Cast Copper Alloy
Casting Method: Solid Sand Casting

Context

This Kai Vilakku (hand lamp) reflects the devotional metal traditions of Chettinad households in the early 20th century.

The crest bears the Thiruman (Vaishnava Namam), flanked by solar and lunar emblems - iconographic markers of Vishnu devotion frequently incorporated into sectarian domestic metalwork. The composition signals household identity rather than temple ornamentation.

Its substantial weight and solid construction indicate an object made for sustained ritual use. Unlike later hollow reproductions, this lamp was cast in a dense copper-rich alloy, providing stability during repeated wick lighting and extended exposure to heat.

The leaf-shaped basin retains visible carbonisation consistent with long-term oil and camphor use. Such lamps were commonly placed in the thinnai (veranda) or domestic shrine during daily worship.

Material & Craft

Cast using traditional sand mould techniques, the surface preserves the granular texture characteristic of early workshop production. Minor asymmetries along the rim and reverse reflect hand-finishing rather than mechanical tooling.

The depth of patina and tonal variation across the surface suggest prolonged ritual handling and natural oxidation over time.

Condition

Deep natural patina preserved.
Verdigris present within recessed detailing.
Carbon deposits visible in basin interior.
