The Domestic Lamp Bearer
Artifact Details
Era: Late 20th Century (circa 1980s)
Origin: Tamil Nadu, South India
Material: Hollow-Cast Brass
Context
In Tamil domestic metalwork, the Paavai (maiden figure) appears as a bearer of light - a devotional form integrated into the daily rhythms of the home rather than a fixed temple icon.
Unlike heavier temple lamps intended for permanent installation, hollow-cast figures such as this were designed for portability. They were typically placed within household shrines and moved during the evening lighting ritual.
The softened contours of the face and the gentle smoothing along the nose, chin, and hands are consistent with long-term handling and oil application over decades of use.
