In traditional South Indian architecture, the mahāthvaaram (main threshold) marks the transition between the outer and inner realms of a home. Bell clusters such as this were affixed to substantial wooden doors, where movement would activate a low, resonant chime upon entry or exit.
By the mid-20th century, similar forms were found across temple-adjacent residences and Wada-style homes in the Deccan region.
In the Agamic understanding, sound (naadam) precedes presence. The bells articulate passage, announcing movement while subtly shifting the atmosphere of a space.
